Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
What was revealed to me in 1 Corinthians 1:26-31?
At one time, this was a verse that I had memorized. It had a great impact on me when I was making the decision to be a true follower instead of a fan. Verse 26 made me reflect on who I was when the Lord placed upon on my heart to surrender. By human standards, if I was going to compare, I really had no standing to think that I could make a difference in the Kingdom of God. But by God's standard, I was exactly where He wanted me to be. This is not about celebrating foolishness or being uneducated. It's about salvation coming through Christ. Man is always going to elevate himself over God when Christ is not the focus. Christ will bring everyone to the same level. He can use people in all walks of life to build His Kingdom. This is counter cultural because we live in a world of "have's and have not's". We rank each other and compare. We want what others have. Others think they are better than those that don't have material possessions or appear to be highly educated. Jesus came to tear all that up. To flip the script. I love verse 30. Because of God that we are "in Christ Jesus". We are "in". We are able to participate in the Holy Trinity. That is amazing!. Jesus is the "wisdom" from God. We need to study Him and know everything about Him. These include "righteousness" (we are made right before God because of His life and finished work on the cross and we have faith), "holiness" (we are constantly being sanctified or being made more holy as we are in Christ and He is in us), "redemption" (He paid the price that we could not, He has redeemed us and adopted us into His family). This is what we should boast about! Thank you Jesus for these incredible gifts that you lavish on us when we choose You over the world!
And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.
What was revealed to me in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5?
It would have been real easy for Paul to take advantage of the situation and elevate himself to God-like status. He is doing His best to be a witness and show humility while elevating Christ. There are so many divisions today in the church. There have been countless examples of men and women that have taken advantage of their popularity in the name of Christ and used it for their own glory and not God's. Did they become popular because they were telling others what they wanted to hear? When I watched the video "The American Gospel", it made me realize that today is no different than the time of Paul. As sinful people, we can be led astray rather quickly by those that are catering to the masses. We have to know what we believe! We have to test everything we hear with scripture! We should be diving deep and allowing the Holy Spirit to teach and guide us. This is so important! Paul was keenly aware of power of the Holy Spirit. He kept it simple. He preached Jesus Christ and His death and resurrection. He came with fear and reverence for the power that caused this to happen. I love it when a pastor is delivering his message by taking the truth of scripture and relating it to how it has changed his life. They share their trials. They elevate Christ and not themselves. They are real. This is what Paul is trying to do here. It's all about the power of the Spirit working through Paul. Faith needs to be based on that power and not Paul's. This is awesome!
What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. 9 For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.
What was revealed to me in 1 Corinthians 3:5-8?
These verses are very challenging to me but also very comforting. The challenge is that I want to have influence. I want to know if I am making a difference for the Kingdom. I have to be careful, however, that it doesn't just become about what I am building and not God working through me. I have to be careful of pride. This discipline of being in the Word helps me immensely! The other challenge is that I want God to work when I want Him to work. I really struggle with making plans and working the plan but not seeing anything happen. Was it a bad plan? Should I move in another direction? Where is the fruit of my labor? I am learning to be more patient in waiting for God to move. If my plans are done with the right intention and heart and I am inviting the wisdom of God into the making of these plans, then He will make it grow in His time and not mine. I need to trust that He is working even if I don't see it. The comforting part for me is to realize that the current Kingdom of God on earth all works together for those who are working for the right purpose. We are all working together and serve a purpose. We shouldn't feel pressure to perform, we should have joy in the journey. We are God's instruments with different gifts and abilities. What I am looking forward to is that glorious day when the Lord will reveal all of His work that I had a part in. I can hear Him now. "Tim, do you remember John, the coach that you talked to at the coaches clinic in October of 2020? The one that you had a two minute conversation with? Well, that two minute conversation planted a seed in his heart. There were five others that helped bring him along until he finally made the decision to join the family ten years later. Well done Tim! John is eager to see you!"
I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children. 15 Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.
What was revealed to me in 1 Corinthians 4:14-17?
To conclude, Paul puts himself in the role of a spiritual father. A father that loves his children will discipline them when it is appropriate. This is done out of love. A father will set the example that he wants his children to follow. To do this, Paul is sending Timothy to come along side and model "the way of life in Christ Jesus". We all need spiritual mentors in our life. Those that can model and show us the way. I am thankful for those mentors in my life!
I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.
What was revealed to me in 1 Corinthians 5:9-11?
We are called to be in the world but not of the world. The process of sanctification (being made separate) as we grow stronger in our faith is necessary because it allows us to "be a light in the darkness". The dark does not like the light. Some will lash out because their sin is being exposed and they are conflicted. Some will be curious as to why you believe that way and be more open. Others will just be indifferent and continue to be spiritually blind. We don't really control it.
